Neither the government nor the national media should have total control over the national agenda.  However, with these two institutions at the center of the national scope and, in a sense, designing the national scope, it is inevitable that both will always have some control over the agenda.  The government is the overseer of our laws and supervises our national and foreign policy.  The media brings to light the practices of our government, but concurrently publicizes their own schemas due to corporate interests and political influences.  This causes for a constant battle for the control over the direction of our nation and a consistent negation and revision of information delivered to the public.

According to democracy, the citizens of our nation should have the most control over our national agenda.  In essence, we citizens still have a major influence on the agenda, but many do not know how to exercise their rights and privileges, and countless Americans fail to even educate themselves on the agenda enough to want to make change.  This leaves the government and the media with virtually limitless leverage to oblige their own ideals and concerns to the masses.

As we move further into the 21st century and war and immigration conflicts occupy our national concern, it is important that all Americans become aware of this battle between our government and the media and the quest for control of the national agenda.  By becoming aware, we as individuals can begin to take a position on these issues, and find an outlet for our voices and thoughts to be heard and recognized.  If we continue to allow the government and the media to control our psyche in regards to our nation’s position in the world, the agenda will be one solely intended for the wealth of the already wealthy.
